On February 14th, our 10-month-old baby girl had a referral appointment scheduled with Dr. Marta Bejuk. We had waited five weeks for this specific appointment and were looking forward to having our daughter examined by a doctor who was so highly recommended by our family doctor. It was one of those mornings where life with a preschooler and baby was just not going the way that we had planned. Long story short, we were running late to see Dr. Bejuk. We live in Mississauga, so our drive to Oakville was approximately half an hour. On the way there, we had called the doctor’s office twice to inform the receptionist that we would be late. Neither time was our phone call answered, but rather went straight to voicemail. We disregarded it knowing that we were just 15 minutes away and would eventually arrive to tell our story anyway. Our appointment was for 12:00pm – we arrived exactly at 12:21 with our daughter’s health card in hand, only to be notified by the receptionist that the doctor has a 20-minute late policy in place and therefore could not see us that day. We were in disbelief, since we were only one minute past the allotted 20-minute late policy, but even more so because Dr. Bejuk’s office is known to have overly long wait times. We tried to reason with the receptionist, as we had taken time off work, but she rudely persisted offering no solution at all. We decided that we would wait to personally speak to Dr. Bejuk when she made an appearance in the waiting room. Dr. Bejuk arrived immediately after being notified by the other receptionist that we were awaiting here. She stood firm on her decision to not see our daughter, due to our tardiness, and admitted that she made the decision way before we even stepped foot into her office. She also stated that she is SO busy that she no longer accepts new patients, implying that new patients are not her priority – she definitely made us feel that way. She went on to confess that she is always behind schedule, but today for the first time in a long time she is actually on time. She also pointed out that she has made exceptions in the past for late patients, but will not do so today. It is very clear that Dr. Bejuk values her own time, but is indifferent to yours. She argued her reasoning for not taking in our daughter for nearly 20 minutes in the waiting room in front of other patients, when she could have used that time to examine our daughter instead. The entire visit was condescending and extremely unprofessional. It has now been three weeks since this awful occurrence and it still bothers us that Dr. Bejuk had made the decision to not examine a sick child at no fault of hers whatsoever. The one solution that Dr. Bejuk offered was to try and “fit” us into her schedule the following week. After the way that we were treated, she would be the last pediatrician that I would choose for my children.
